In 1912 Walter Vogt founded the FORTIS Watches factory in Grenchen, Switzerland.
In 1926 the world's first self winding wristwatch in series production the ‘Harwood Automatic’ was presented at the Basle Fair and attracted intense interest. In the 1930's, FORTIS produced two more classic automatic watches which became famous products: first came the ‘Rolls’, a wristwatch to become legendary with a winding system developed by Leon Hatot of Paris. The watches name was derived from the motion of the movement inside the case to wind the movement.
On the occasion of the company's 25th anniversary FORTIS Watches manufactured its first chronographs which are admired for their precision until today. Becoming known throughout the world ‘Wandfluh’ (the name of the Jura mountain close to Grenchen) was the name given to the FORTIS Chronograph .
Between 1940 and 1987, FORTIS Watches continued to develop sophisticate products, the Stratoliner and Spacematic (1962) to delight watch enthusiasts world wide while weathering the onslaught of competition from the Japanese quartz revolution.
In 1994, after two years of testing and preparation the Yuri Gagarin Russian State Scientific-Research Test Center of Cosmonauts Training in Star City chose the FORTIS OFFICIAL COSMONAUTS CHRONOGRAPH to be part of their cosmonauts official equipment. Developed in intensive cooperation with the experienced experts of the center, the FORTIS automatic chronograph received its unique design which meets the cosmonauts needs in every detail of its function. |

The search for the most comfortable wristwatch with automatic winding for use during space missions led to the development of the Official Cosmonauts series in 1992. The Official Cosmonauts Chronograph is worn over the space suit withstanding extreme temperatures and demanding atmospheric conditions at a distance of 350 to 400kms from the earth’s surface.
