Description

South Sea pearls are large, rare, and naturally luminescent saltwater pearls from the Pinctada maxima oyster, found in the tropical waters of northern Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and French Polynesia. They are prized for their significant size, thick layers of nacre (which create their deep glow), and unique colors, which range from white to golden. Cultivated through a complex “seeding” process, these pearls spend two years growing, resulting in substantial size and fewer, less perfect surfaces compared to mass-produced pearls.

• Color:

  They are known for their wide color range, including white with silver or rose overtones, and rich golden hues. 

• Formation:

  They are saltwater pearls, formed inside the Pinctada maxima oyster, a large and rare species. 

• Rarity:

  Due to the unique environment required and the single pearl production per oyster, they are considered the rarest of all pearl types. 

• Surface:

  Natural South Sea pearls often feature “beauty spots,” which are small ridges or marks, rather than being perfectly unblemished, as these features contribute to their unique, natural beauty. 

• Growth Period: Over approximately two years, the oyster secretes layers of nacre around the nucleus, a process that gives the pearl its size and lustre. 
• Symbolism: They are seen as a symbol of wealth, wisdom, purity, and good fortune.
