What Happens When You Commission a Custom Engagement Ring — What to Expect, Step by Step
Most people who come to Franco Jewellers for a custom engagement ring have never done anything like it before. They know they want something different from the standard catalogue — something that reflects their partner specifically, not just a style that happens to be popular this season — but the idea of commissioning a piece from scratch can feel unfamiliar. What does the process actually involve? How many appointments will it take? When do you choose the diamond? What if the design doesn’t turn out the way you imagined?
These are exactly the right questions to be asking. And the answers, once you know them, have a way of making the whole thing feel a great deal more approachable than it seemed.
This is a step-by-step guide to what commissioning a custom engagement ring actually looks like at Franco Jewellers — from the first conversation through to the moment you walk out with the finished ring in your pocket.
Before You Book: How Much Do You Need to Know?
The most common concern we hear before a first consultation is some version of: “I don’t know enough to have a useful conversation yet.” People worry they haven’t researched the right things, don’t know the terminology, or don’t have a clear enough vision to avoid wasting Silvana or Daniela’s time.
The honest answer is that you don’t need to know anything before your first appointment. You don’t need to know diamond shapes from diamond cuts. You don’t need a Pinterest board, a reference image, or a clear idea of what style you want. You don’t even need to know your partner’s ring size.
What’s useful to have — and this is all — is a general sense of your partner’s style (the jewellery they wear, whether they prefer simple or detailed pieces, whether they gravitate toward yellow gold or white), a rough idea of your budget, and a proposal timeline in mind. Everything else develops through the consultation.
If you do have reference images or inspiration, bring them. But don’t worry if you don’t.
Step One: The First Consultation
The process begins with a conversation, not a commitment. Your first appointment at our Collins Street boutique — in the 9th floor showroom of the Manchester Unity Building — is an opportunity to meet Silvana or Daniela, look at examples of our work, and talk through what you’re envisioning.
This consultation is complimentary and carries no obligation whatsoever. Many clients visit us two or three times before they’re ready to move forward, and that is genuinely fine. The “friends just the same” philosophy that Franco Ceresiani built this business on in 1968 means the goal is always a decision you’re completely confident in, not a quick sale.
During the first consultation, Silvana or Daniela will explore your partner’s style preferences with you — drawing on their decades of experience to help you articulate things you might find difficult to put into words. They’ll discuss metal options (18ct white, yellow, or rose gold; platinum), diamond shapes, setting styles, and how different design choices will affect the overall look and feel of the ring. They’ll also talk you through budget realistically — what different diamond qualities and design complexities involve in terms of cost — so there are no surprises later.
You’ll also have the opportunity to look at and handle rings from our collection, which gives you something concrete to respond to: “I like this but simpler,” or “this setting but with a different stone shape.” That tactile reference point is often more useful than any number of images on a screen.
By the end of the first consultation, you’ll have a clearer sense of direction — even if the design isn’t yet finalised — and Silvana or Daniela will have everything they need to bring design concepts to the next stage.
Typical duration: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Step Two: Diamond Selection
For most custom engagement rings, diamond selection happens either during the first consultation or as a dedicated second appointment. This is where the centre stone — the heart of the ring — is chosen, and it’s a step worth taking seriously.
At Franco Jewellers, all diamonds are GIA certified. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the world’s most respected diamond grading authority, and their certification gives you a detailed, independent assessment of the stone’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — the four characteristics that determine both quality and value. When Silvana or Daniela presents diamond options to you, each stone comes with its certificate, and they’ll explain clearly what the grades mean and how they affect the diamond’s appearance in real life.
A critical point here: a diamond’s grades on paper don’t always translate simply to how beautiful it looks in practice. A stone with a slightly lower colour grade but an exceptional cut can outperform a technically superior stone that’s been cut poorly. Silvana and Daniela’s experience means they guide you toward stones that genuinely perform — diamonds that catch light beautifully and look exceptional — rather than simply optimising for certificate numbers.
Both natural mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are available. Lab-grown diamonds are physically and chemically identical to mined diamonds and are available at significantly lower price points, which can allow you to invest in a larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget. This is a discussion worth having openly during the consultation.
Once a diamond is selected, it’s reserved for your commission.
Typical duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Step Three: Design Development and CAD Approval
With your stone chosen and your design direction established, our master jeweller — who brings more than 25 years of experience to every piece — develops the ring design in detail. For most custom commissions, this involves CAD (computer-aided design): a precise three-dimensional rendering of the ring that shows you exactly how the finished piece will look before any metal has been touched.
The CAD rendering is shared with you for review and feedback. This is the stage where refinements happen — adjustments to proportions, changes to setting details, modifications to the band profile. You might see the rendering and love it immediately. You might have questions or want something adjusted. Both are completely normal, and this back-and-forth is part of the process, not an imposition on it.
No work begins on the physical ring until you have reviewed the CAD rendering and provided your written approval. That approval is your assurance that what you’ve seen is what will be made.
It’s worth noting that a handmade ring — which is how Franco Jewellers creates all custom pieces, not through casting — will have a warmth and individuality that a CAD rendering can’t fully capture. The rendering shows the design; the finished piece has a character and presence that only comes from being made by skilled hands.
Typical turnaround: CAD rendering delivered within one to two weeks of design brief confirmation.
Step Four: Creation
Once your approval is given, the ring goes into production. Your piece is handcrafted in our on-site workshop by our master jeweller — the same person whose eye and hands have been part of the design conversation from the start. Everything stays in-house. There is no external casting house, no overseas manufacturer, no anonymous workshop. The ring is made here, at 220 Collins Street, by someone whose work you can see and whose name you know.
The handmaking process — rather than casting — is a genuine differentiator that fewer than ten per cent of jewellers offer. A handmade ring is formed by working the metal directly: forging, shaping, and finishing by hand. This produces a denser, stronger piece of metalwork with finer detail capability and a quality of finish that casting simply cannot replicate. When you’re creating a ring to last a lifetime, it matters how it’s made.
During the creation period, Silvana or Daniela will keep you updated on progress. If you’re working toward a specific proposal date, that timeline is factored in from the outset — and if any unexpected considerations arise during the making process, you’ll be told immediately rather than discovering them at collection.
Typical turnaround: Four to six weeks from CAD approval, depending on design complexity and workshop load. For proposal deadlines, discuss the timeline at your first consultation — we accommodate specific dates wherever possible.
Step Five: Quality Check and Final Fitting
When the ring is complete, it undergoes a thorough quality inspection by the master jeweller before we contact you for collection. Stone security, setting integrity, surface finish, and overall proportions are all checked against the approved design. The ring doesn’t leave the workshop until it meets the standard every Franco Jewellers piece is held to.
Collection is an in-person appointment at the boutique. This is deliberate — Silvana or Daniela will walk you through the finished piece, explain the care and maintenance it needs, and confirm the fit. If any minor adjustments are needed, they are taken care of before you leave with the ring. A complimentary first resize is available within twelve months of collection if needed after the proposal.
You’ll also receive documentation for the ring — including the GIA certificate for the diamond — and guidance on insurance and ongoing aftercare.
What to bring: Nothing except yourself. The ring will be presented in Franco Jewellers packaging, ready for the proposal.
Timeline Summary: From First Consultation to Collection
For most custom engagement ring commissions, the full process — from first consultation to collection — takes between eight and twelve weeks. Here’s how that typically breaks down:
First consultation and diamond selection: one to two appointments over one to two weeks. CAD design development and approval: one to two weeks. Ring creation: four to six weeks. Quality check and collection appointment: one week.
If you have a specific proposal date in mind, we recommend beginning the process at least ten to twelve weeks beforehand. This allows comfortable time for all stages without rushing any of them. For particularly complex designs or bespoke diamond sourcing, a slightly longer lead time may be recommended.
If you have a tighter timeline, speak to us early — we will always tell you honestly what is achievable rather than make promises we cannot keep.
Ready to Begin?
Commissioning a custom engagement ring at Franco Jewellers is a process designed to feel manageable, personal, and — for most clients — genuinely enjoyable. The first step is simply a conversation. There is no obligation, no pressure, and no minimum spend. Just an hour of dedicated time with Silvana or Daniela in our Collins Street boutique, and the beginning of a ring that will be worn every day for the rest of your partner’s life.

What to Look for When Choosing a Jeweller for Engagement Rings in Melbourne
Melbourne has no shortage of places to buy an engagement ring. From major retail chains in Bourke Street Mall to diamond traders on Collins Street, boutique designers in Fitzroy to online stores offering overnight delivery — the options are genuinely overwhelming. And the stakes are high. This is likely one of the most significant purchases you’ll make, and the jeweller you choose will shape not just the ring itself, but the entire experience of getting there.
So how do you choose the right one? Here are the qualities that genuinely matter when selecting a jeweller for engagement rings in Melbourne — and the questions worth asking before you commit.
1. In-House Manufacturing vs. Outsourced Production
This is one of the most important questions you can ask any jeweller, and one of the least frequently asked.
Many jewellers — including some well-regarded ones — don’t actually make the rings they sell. Designs are sent to external casting houses or overseas manufacturers, finished in-store, and presented to you as if created on the premises. This isn’t necessarily a problem for off-the-shelf rings, but for custom or bespoke work it matters enormously.
When a jeweller manufactures in-house, they have complete control over every stage of the process. They can accommodate genuinely complex designs. They can make adjustments during production. The person advising you is the same person who can speak directly with the craftsman — or in some cases, is the craftsman. And when the ring is ready, you can be confident it was made by skilled hands you actually know something about, not an anonymous workshop.
When visiting any jeweller for engagement rings in Melbourne, ask directly: is this ring made on-site? By whom? How many years of experience does your jeweller have?
2. Diamond Certification — and Whether They Can Explain It
A GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certificate is the international gold standard for diamond grading. It documents a diamond’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — assessed by independent experts with no commercial interest in the outcome. It tells you exactly what you’re buying, and gives you confidence that the quality claimed matches the quality delivered.
Any reputable jeweller selling diamond engagement rings in Melbourne should offer GIA certified stones and be able to walk you through the certificate in plain language. If a jeweller is vague about certification, uses their own in-house grading only, or can’t clearly explain what the 4Cs mean in practical terms, that’s a meaningful warning sign.
Also worth asking: do they offer both natural mined and lab-grown diamonds? A jeweller who can explain the real differences — physical, optical, ethical, financial — without pushing you toward one or the other is demonstrating both expertise and honesty.
3. Genuine Custom Design Capability
“Custom” is one of the most overused words in the jewellery industry. Many jewellers use it to describe selecting a stone from a limited range, choosing a metal colour, or making minor adjustments to an existing catalogue design. That is not custom design — it is personalisation.
True custom design means starting from scratch: a blank page, your vision, and a jeweller with the skills and in-house capability to bring it to life. It means CAD (Computer-Aided Design) renderings so you can see exactly what the ring will look like before any metal is worked. It means iterating on the design through as many rounds as it takes. It means a ring that couldn’t have been made for anyone else, because it was made specifically for her.
When a jeweller says they offer custom design, ask to see examples of genuinely bespoke work — rings that don’t appear in their standard catalogue. Ask how the process works, how long it takes, and who does the actual manufacturing. The answers will tell you quickly whether their custom offering is real or repackaged.
4. Who You’ll Actually Be Working With
There is a meaningful difference between working with the owner of a jewellery business and working with a commissioned sales consultant.
An owner has personal accountability for every piece that leaves the workshop. Their reputation — built over years or decades — rides on your satisfaction. They have the authority to make decisions on the spot, to source a specific diamond, to adjust a design, to go above and beyond without needing to check with a manager. And they have a genuine personal stake in the outcome that no employee can replicate.
A commissioned sales consultant, by contrast, has their own pressures. Inventory to move. Targets to meet. The conversation is shaped — consciously or not — by what they need to sell, rather than what you need to buy.
This isn’t to say every commissioned consultant gives bad advice. But when you are spending thousands of dollars on a ring your partner will wear every day for the rest of her life, knowing that the person advising you has their name and livelihood attached to the outcome is a significant reassurance. Look for jewellers where you deal directly with a principal or owner — particularly one with a long-established reputation in Melbourne.
5. The Consultation Experience — Pressure vs. Partnership
Walk into most jewellery chains on a busy Saturday and you’ll notice the rhythm: multiple consultants, multiple customers, limited time per person, and a quiet but persistent gravitational pull toward making a decision before you leave. It’s not always overt, but the environment is designed for transaction velocity.
The best jewellers for engagement rings in Melbourne operate very differently. They offer private, uninterrupted appointments. They encourage you to take the time you need — to come back multiple times if necessary, to sit with a decision before committing, to bring a friend or your partner. They understand that a purchase of this significance shouldn’t be rushed, and they structure their entire service model around that understanding.
Ask any prospective jeweller: how long do consultations typically run? Can I come back if I need more time? Is there any pressure to decide on the day? A jeweller confident in their work and their relationships will never need to manufacture urgency.
6. Longevity, Reviews, and the Evidence of Long-Term Trust
It’s easy for any jeweller to describe themselves as Melbourne’s finest. What matters is the evidence behind the claim.
Look at Google reviews — not just the overall rating, but the patterns across them. Are customers returning years later? Are they mentioning the same consultant by name across reviews spanning a decade? Are they describing their children coming back for their own engagement rings? Generational loyalty is rare and hard to fake. It means the quality and service have remained consistent across many years and many hundreds of clients.
Also consider longevity itself. A jewellery business that has operated in Melbourne for decades — through recessions, retail disruptions, and changing tastes — has demonstrated something that no amount of marketing can manufacture: the ability to earn and keep trust across generations of clients.
Finding the Right Jeweller for Your Engagement Ring in Melbourne
The right jeweller for engagement rings in Melbourne is one who makes jewellery on-site, sells GIA certified diamonds, offers genuine custom design capability, and works with you directly — without pressure, without rush, and with a clear personal investment in getting it right.
At Franco Jewellers, Silvana and Daniela Ceresiani have spent their careers building exactly that kind of practice from their Collins Street boutique in the Manchester Unity Building. With 58 years of Italian heritage craftsmanship, an in-house master jeweller with 25+ years of experience, and a 4.9-star rating across more than 444 Google reviews, Franco Jewellers is Melbourne’s destination for couples who want an engagement ring created with genuine expertise and genuine care.
Whether you’re beginning to explore custom made engagement rings for the first time, or you already know exactly what you want and need the right craftsperson to bring it to life, we’d love to start the conversation.

Engagement Ring Shopping in Melbourne – Your Complete Guide
Shopping for an engagement ring in Melbourne is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. With countless jewellers across the city—from massive retail chains in shopping centres to intimate boutiques on Collins Street—how do you know where to start? This comprehensive guide walks you through everything you need to know about buying engagement rings in Melbourne, helping you make confident decisions and find the perfect ring to symbolise your commitment.
Why Melbourne Is a Fantastic City for Engagement Ring Shopping
Melbourne’s reputation as a sophisticated, design-conscious city extends to its jewellery scene. The city offers an exceptional range of options for engagement rings, from international luxury brands to family-run boutiques with generations of expertise. Melbourne’s jewellery district, centred on Collins Street in the CBD, has been the heart of Australia’s diamond trade for over a century, giving you access to some of the country’s finest jewellers and craftsmen.
What makes Melbourne particularly special is the diversity of choice. You’ll find everything from contemporary designers pushing boundaries with innovative designs to traditional jewellers upholding Old World craftsmanship techniques. This variety means you’re not limited to what’s trending in retail chains—you can discover truly unique pieces or work with expert craftsmen to create completely custom engagement rings.
Melbourne’s jewellery community also benefits from the city’s multicultural heritage. Italian, Greek, and European jewellers have brought their traditional craftsmanship to Melbourne, creating a rich tapestry of styles and techniques. This cultural diversity translates into engagement rings that reflect global design trends while being crafted locally with expertise passed down through generations.
Understanding Melbourne’s Engagement Ring Landscape
Collins Street: Melbourne’s Diamond District
Collins Street, particularly between Spring Street and Elizabeth Street, forms Melbourne’s traditional diamond and jewellery district. This prestigious stretch houses some of the city’s finest jewellers, from intimate boutiques to established brands. Shopping on Collins Street offers several advantages: you can visit multiple jewellers in one trip, you’re surrounded by heritage architecture that makes the experience feel special, and you benefit from the expertise concentrated in this historic jewellery precinct.
The Collins Street experience differs markedly from shopping centre jewellers. Boutique jewellers here often operate by appointment, ensuring you receive dedicated attention without competing with other customers. Many occupy heritage buildings—the Manchester Unity Building, built in 1932, houses several jewellers including Franco Jewellers, adding historic charm to your engagement ring shopping experience.
Shopping Centre Retail Chains
Major shopping centres across Melbourne—Chadstone, Emporium, Melbourne Central—feature retail chain jewellers offering ready-made engagement rings at accessible price points. These jewellers provide convenience, extended trading hours, and the ability to browse without appointments.
However, chain jewellers typically offer limited customisation options and may employ commission-based sales staff who benefit from higher-value sales. You’ll generally find mass-produced designs available in multiple locations rather than unique pieces. For couples seeking something truly special or who want complete control over design, boutique jewellers typically provide better options.
Independent Jewellers Across Melbourne
Beyond Collins Street, independent jewellers operate throughout Melbourne’s suburbs, from South Yarra and Toorak to Hawthorn and Brighton. These neighbourhood jewellers often provide personalised service and custom design capabilities while being more accessible for locals who prefer not to travel to the CBD.
When choosing an independent jeweller, look for those with established reputations, positive customer reviews, and clear expertise in engagement rings specifically. Ask about their design process, where rings are manufactured (on-site or outsourced), and what certifications they provide for diamonds.
What to Look for When Choosing Your Melbourne Jeweller
Expertise and Experience
The jeweller you choose should have substantial experience specifically with engagement rings—not just jewellery in general. Look for jewellers who’ve been operating for decades rather than years. Established jewellers have built reputations they must maintain, providing accountability and confidence in quality.
At Franco Jewellers, we’ve specialised in engagement rings for 58 years of experience in Melbourne, serving multiple generations of families. This longevity proves consistent quality and customer satisfaction—businesses don’t survive nearly six decades without excellence.
Custom Design Capabilities
Even if you think you want a ready-made ring, choosing a jeweller with strong custom design capabilities ensures you have options if you can’t find exactly what you envision. The best Melbourne jewellers offer everything from minor modifications to completely bespoke creations.
Look for jewellers with in-house workshops rather than those who outsource manufacturing. In-house creation provides quality control, transparency in the process, and ability to handle complex custom work. When jewellers outsource to external casting houses, you lose visibility into how your ring is made and have less recourse if quality issues arise.
Diamond Certification and Quality
Any reputable jeweller selling engagement rings in Melbourne should provide GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certification for their diamonds. GIA certification offers independent, internationally recognised verification of diamond quality, ensuring you know exactly what you’re purchasing.
Be wary of jewellers who don’t provide certification, offer in-house certifications instead of independent GIA grading, or seem reluctant to discuss diamond characteristics in detail. Transparency about diamond quality—including the 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat)—indicates a jeweller who prioritises education over sales pressure.
Service Approach and Atmosphere
The jeweller’s approach fundamentally affects your experience. Do they pressure you with limited-time offers and urgency tactics, or provide patient guidance and encourage you to take time making decisions? Do they listen to your preferences, or push you toward higher-priced options regardless of what you want?
Visit several jewellers to compare experiences. Notice whether you feel comfortable, whether staff seem genuinely interested in finding what’s right for you, or whether you feel like just another transaction. The best Melbourne jewellers prioritise long-term relationships over quick sales, knowing satisfied customers return for wedding bands, anniversary gifts, and eventually, engagement rings for the next generation.
Budget Considerations for Melbourne Engagement Rings
Melbourne engagement ring prices vary dramatically based on diamond quality, metal choice, design complexity, and where you purchase. Understanding typical price ranges helps set realistic expectations and budget appropriately.
What Influences Engagement Ring Pricing
Diamond Quality: The diamond typically represents 50-70% of your total cost. The 4Cs—Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight—all affect price exponentially. A one-carat diamond might cost anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000+ depending on these quality characteristics.
Metal Choice: 18ct white, yellow, or rose gold are popular choices, with platinum being the most expensive option. Gold prices fluctuate with global markets, but generally, expect the setting (without diamond) to cost $1,500-$5,000 depending on complexity.
Design Complexity: Simple solitaire settings cost less than intricate halo designs, pavé settings, or completely custom creations. Custom design fees vary, but many jewellers include design consultation in the overall ring price.
Jeweller Location and Overhead: Collins Street boutiques may have higher operating costs than suburban jewellers, though they often provide better value than high-rent shopping centre chains. Don’t assume higher prices automatically mean better quality—compare what you’re actually receiving.
Typical Melbourne Engagement Ring Budgets
Melbourne couples typically invest $5,000-$15,000 on engagement rings, though ranges vary widely based on personal finances and priorities. Some couples spend $3,000-$5,000, while others invest $20,000-$50,000+ for exceptional diamonds and custom designs.
Rather than following arbitrary “rules” about spending multiple months’ salary, determine a budget that feels comfortable for your financial situation. A quality engagement ring at $6,000 can be absolutely stunning and meaningful—it’s about choosing wisely within your means, not spending the most possible.
Maximising Value in Melbourne
To get the best value when buying engagement rings in Melbourne:
Prioritise Cut Quality: Diamond cut affects brilliance more than any other factor. Choose Excellent or Very Good cut grades for maximum sparkle, even if it means slightly smaller carat size.
Consider Near-Colourless Diamonds: G-H-I colour grades appear white to most eyes while costing significantly less than D-E-F colourless grades. The difference is often imperceptible when the diamond is set.
Choose Eye-Clean Clarity: VS2 or SI1 clarity grades often appear flawless to the naked eye while costing much less than IF or VVS grades. Your jeweller can help identify eye-clean diamonds at lower clarity grades.
Explore Lab-Grown Diamonds: Lab-grown diamonds offer 30-40% savings compared to mined diamonds of equivalent quality, allowing you to choose a larger or higher-quality stone within the same budget.
Work with Independent Jewellers: Boutique jewellers often provide better value than retail chains because they have lower overhead costs and don’t rely on brand premiums. You’re paying for craftsmanship rather than marketing.
The Melbourne Engagement Ring Shopping Timeline
How Long Does the Process Take?
For ready-made engagement rings in Melbourne, you can purchase same-day from most jewellers, though you may need resizing which takes 1-2 weeks. For custom diamond engagement rings, expect 4-8 weeks from initial consultation through final completion.
The custom design timeline includes: initial consultation (1-2 hours), diamond sourcing if needed (1-2 weeks), design development and approval (1-2 weeks), manufacturing (3-4 weeks), and final fitting. This timeline ensures quality craftsmanship without rushing—your engagement ring deserves careful attention at every stage.
When to Start Shopping
Begin engagement ring shopping 2-3 months before your planned proposal. This timeframe allows for thoughtful decision-making, custom design if desired, and avoiding the stress of rushed timelines. Many couples appreciate having the ring ready well before the proposal date, eliminating last-minute anxiety.
If you’re planning a proposal during peak seasons—Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or specific anniversary dates—start shopping even earlier. Melbourne jewellers experience higher demand during these periods, potentially extending timelines.
Melbourne’s Most Romantic Proposal Locations
Once you have your engagement ring, Melbourne offers countless beautiful proposal locations:
Royal Botanic Gardens: Stunning landscapes, the ornamental lake, and seasonal blooms create romantic settings year-round. The gardens provide both intimate corners and scenic overlooks perfect for proposals.
Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes: Iconic and colourful, Brighton Beach offers seaside romance with Melbourne’s famous bathing boxes providing memorable backdrops for proposal photos.
Shrine of Remembrance Steps: The Shrine’s forecourt and steps provide elegant architecture with city views, particularly beautiful at sunset or during Remembrance Day commemorations.
Eureka Skydeck: For dramatic city views, Eureka Skydeck’s “Edge” experience or the viewing platform offers breathtaking 360-degree perspectives of Melbourne.
Yarra River and Southbank: Riverside walks, particularly near Birrarung Marr or Southbank Promenade, combine natural beauty with city energy, perfect for casual proposals that feel spontaneous yet meaningful.
Fitzroy Gardens: Historic gardens with tree-lined avenues, Cooks’ Cottage, and the Fairies Tree provide enchanting settings steeped in Melbourne heritage.
What to Ask Melbourne Jewellers
When visiting jewellers to explore engagement ring collections, ask these essential questions:
About Diamonds:
- Do you provide GIA certification for all diamonds?
- Can you explain the 4Cs and show me how they affect appearance and price?
- Do you offer both mined and lab-grown diamonds?
- Where do you source your diamonds?
About Design:
- Can you create custom designs, or only modify existing styles?
- Do you have an in-house workshop, or outsource manufacturing?
- What’s the typical timeline for custom engagement rings?
- Can I see the ring during production?
About Service:
- What’s included in the price (setting, diamond, sizing, certification)?
- Do you offer complimentary resizing and maintenance?
- What’s your warranty or guarantee?
- What happens if I’m not satisfied with the final ring?
About Aftercare:
- Do you provide cleaning and inspection services?
- How often should I have my ring checked?
- What if a stone becomes loose or the ring needs repair?
Quality jewellers answer these questions readily and transparently. Hesitation or evasive responses indicate potential concerns.

Why Melbourne Is Australia’s Premier Destination for Engagement Rings
Melbourne has earned its reputation as Australia’s jewellery capital. The city boasts a remarkable concentration of skilled jewellers, from heritage family businesses to contemporary designers, all offering distinctive approaches to engagement ring design.
A Rich Heritage of Craftsmanship
Melbourne’s jewellery industry traces its roots to the gold rush era, establishing a tradition of excellence that continues today. Many of the city’s finest jewellers, including Franco Jewellers, combine European craftsmanship techniques with modern innovation, creating pieces that honour tradition while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
Diverse Styles for Every Taste
Whether you prefer classic elegance, vintage glamour, or cutting-edge modern design, Melbourne jewellers cater to every preference. The city’s multicultural influences inspire unique design perspectives you won’t find elsewhere in Australia.
Access to Quality Materials
Melbourne jewellers maintain strong relationships with diamond suppliers and gemstone dealers worldwide, ensuring access to exceptional stones at competitive prices. This means more choice and better value for engagement ring buyers.
Understanding Diamond Quality: The 4Cs Explained
Before purchasing a diamond engagement ring in Melbourne, understanding the 4Cs helps you make an informed decision and maximise your budget.
Cut: The Most Important Factor
A diamond’s cut determines how brilliantly it sparkles. Even a flawless diamond appears dull with a poor cut. Look for “Excellent” or “Very Good” cut grades for maximum brilliance. The cut affects how light enters, reflects within, and exits the diamond.
Colour: The Subtle Spectrum
Diamond colour grades range from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). For white gold or platinum settings, diamonds in the D-F range appear most brilliant. Yellow gold settings allow you to choose G-J grades without compromising appearance, offering excellent value.
Clarity: Nature’s Fingerprints
Clarity measures internal inclusions and external blemishes. Grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). Most inclusions in VS1-VS2 grades remain invisible to the naked eye, representing the sweet spot between quality and value.
Carat: Size and Presence
Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not its size. A well-cut 0.9-carat diamond can appear larger than a poorly cut 1-carat stone. Consider the wearer’s hand size and lifestyle when selecting carat weight.
| Grade Level | Cut | Colour | Clarity | Best For |
| Premium | Excellent | D-E | VVS1-VVS2 | Maximum brilliance, investment pieces |

Frequently Asked Questions About Engagement Rings in Melbourne
How much should I spend on an engagement ring in Melbourne?
There’s no fixed rule. Spend what feels comfortable for your financial situation. Melbourne jewellers offer beautiful engagement rings across all price points. Focus on quality and meaning rather than arbitrary spending targets. At Franco Jewellers, we create stunning rings starting from various price points to suit different budgets.
How long does it take to get a custom engagement ring made?
Custom engagement rings typically require 4-6 weeks from design approval to completion. We recommend beginning the process 8-10 weeks before your planned proposal to allow time for consultations, design refinements, and any adjustments.
Should I bring my partner when shopping for engagement rings?
This depends on whether you’re planning a surprise proposal. Many couples shop together to ensure the ring matches preferences perfectly. Others prefer the traditional surprise approach. Both methods work beautifully—there’s no right or wrong answer.
What size engagement ring should I buy if I don’t know my partner’s size?
Several strategies help determine ring size secretly: borrow a ring they wear on their ring finger, ask their friends or family, or trace a ring onto paper. If uncertain, it’s better to size slightly larger—rings are easier to size down than up. Franco Jewellers offers complimentary first resizing within 12 months.
Are lab-grown diamonds a good choice for engagement rings?
Lab-grown diamonds offer identical physical and chemical properties to natural diamonds at lower price points. They represent an excellent choice for budget-conscious couples or those prioritising environmental considerations. Our team can discuss both options during your consultation.
Do you offer payment plans for engagement rings?
Yes, Franco Jewellers offers flexible payment options including Afterpay and Zip Pay. We also accept deposits to secure custom commissions, with the balance due upon completion. Discuss payment preferences during your consultation.

Guide to Wedding Rings in Melbourne and How to Keep Them Looking Perfect
Wedding rings are more than just pieces of jewellery—they are symbols of love, commitment, and shared memories. For couples in Melbourne, caring for wedding rings properly ensures they retain their shine and durability for years to come. The city’s climate, with its mix of humidity, heat, and occasional storms, can affect the appearance and longevity of your rings. Understanding how to maintain your rings will help keep them looking as beautiful as the day you exchanged them.
Protecting Your Rings from Daily Wear
Even the most durable wedding rings are exposed to wear and tear every day. Simple activities such as washing hands, cooking, or gardening can expose your rings to harsh chemicals, abrasive surfaces, and impacts. Regular professional cleaning and inspections by a trusted jeweller help maintain their integrity. By having your rings checked periodically, you can prevent small scratches or loose settings from developing into larger issues.
Understanding Material-Specific Care
Different metals and gemstones require different care approaches. Gold and platinum rings are highly durable, but they can develop scratches over time. Certain alloys, like rose gold, may require additional attention to maintain their colour and finish. For rings featuring gemstones, it is important to consider the stone’s hardness and sensitivity. Diamonds are extremely hard, but other stones such as sapphires or emeralds may require more careful handling to prevent chipping or loosening. Consulting with your jeweller will provide guidance specific to your ring’s materials.
Minimising Exposure to Environmental Factors
Melbourne’s climate can affect the condition of wedding rings in subtle ways. Humidity and exposure to water can tarnish certain metals, while heat and sun can affect gemstones. It is advisable to remove your rings when engaging in activities such as swimming, heavy cleaning, or exposure to chemicals like chlorine or household detergents. Wearing protective gloves or storing rings safely when not in use helps preserve their finish and prevents unnecessary wear.
Routine Cleaning and Professional Maintenance
Regular cleaning helps maintain your ring’s sparkle and can prevent the buildup of oils, dirt, or skin residue that dulls its appearance. Professional jewellers use specialised equipment to clean and polish rings safely, restoring their original brilliance without compromising the metal or gemstones. Additionally, routine inspections can identify any potential issues with prongs, settings, or bands before they become major problems, ensuring your rings remain secure and visually flawless.
Storage and Safe Handling
When you are not wearing your rings, storing them properly is essential. Keep them in a soft, padded jewellery box or a secure compartment to avoid scratches from other jewellery. Avoid leaving rings in places with extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can impact the metal and gemstones. Proper storage combined with mindful handling significantly extends the life of your wedding rings.

Overwhelmed by Engagement Ring Shopping in Melbourne? Start Here
With so many options—from high-end boutiques to endless online stores—shopping for engagement rings in Melbourne can quickly go from exciting to exhausting. The choices are everywhere, but how do you find a ring that truly reflects your story, not just the latest trend?
That’s where local expertise comes in. Melbourne jewellers understand the style, values, and expectations of local couples. They offer something no online algorithm can: personalised service, honest advice, and a deep understanding of what makes each love story unique.
At Franco Jewellers, a trusted family-run business with decades of experience, this personalised approach is everything. Our team goes beyond selling rings; we listen, guide, and help create meaningful pieces that last a lifetime. Whether you’re shopping on your own or with your partner, you’ll find support, insight, and a warm welcome every step of the way.
The Four Cs Simplified
You’ll hear a lot about the “Four Cs”: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. Here’s a simplified overview to help you feel more confident:
- Cut: This affects how much the diamond sparkles. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully.
- Colour: Diamonds range from colourless (most rare) to slightly tinted. The clearer, the better.
- Clarity: Small natural imperfections are common. Most are invisible to the naked eye.
- Carat: This refers to the diamond’s weight, not just size. Two stones can look the same but weigh differently based on depth and shape.
Rather than obsessing over every metric, focus on what looks and feels right. Seeing diamonds in person with a trusted jeweller can help you make a confident choice.
Consider Going Custom
Custom doesn’t mean complicated. In fact, many Melbourne couples are now opting for custom engagement rings to reflect their unique love story. Whether it’s incorporating a family heirloom or designing from scratch, a bespoke ring brings deeper meaning.
Franco Jewellers offers one-on-one consultations to bring your vision to life, guiding you through design, selection, and craftsmanship with complete transparency.
Timing and Budget Tips
You don’t need to rush the process but you also don’t want to leave it too late, especially if you’re considering a custom ring. Give yourself at least 6–8 weeks before your planned proposal.
As for budget, forget the old “three months’ salary” rule. Set a budget that feels right for your lifestyle. A good jeweller will help you make the most of it, offering a range of options without compromising on quality or design.

A Practical Guide to Ring Sizing for Engagement Rings in Melbourne
Finding the perfect engagement ring is a romantic journey filled with excitement and anticipation. But one detail that often causes worry is the ring size. At Franco Jewellers, we understand that getting the right fit is just as important as choosing the right design. After all, an engagement ring should feel comfortable and secure on your partner’s finger — a symbol of your love that fits perfectly every day.
When shopping for engagement rings in Melbourne, taking time to find the correct ring size is a practical step that ensures your gift will be cherished and worn with ease. Here are some tips to guide you through this important process.
Why Ring Size Matters
An engagement ring that’s too tight can be uncomfortable, while one that’s too loose risks slipping off or getting lost. Sizing issues may also affect the ring’s appearance and how it complements your partner’s hand. Getting the size right means your loved one can wear their ring confidently and comfortably for years to come.
How to Measure Ring Size Discreetly
If you want to surprise your partner, measuring their ring size without them knowing can feel tricky. One easy way is to borrow a ring they already wear on their ring finger. Take it to a jeweller or use a ring sizing tool to find the exact size.
If you don’t have access to a ring, consider tracing the inside of a ring on a piece of paper or pressing it into a bar of soap to capture the shape. These impressions can help a jeweller estimate the size.
Another clever method is to ask a close friend or family member who might already know the size or can find out subtly during a casual conversation.
Consider the Season and Time of Day
It might sound surprising, but fingers can change size throughout the day and depending on the weather. Hands tend to swell in warm weather or after physical activity. For the most accurate measurement, it’s best to measure ring size when fingers are at a normal temperature and not swollen.
Keep this in mind when buying engagement rings in Melbourne, as the city’s climate can vary throughout the year.
Sizing Guides and Professional Help
Many jewellery stores in Melbourne, including Franco Jewellers, offer professional ring sizing services. Visiting a store to get sized by an expert ensures accuracy and peace of mind.
Online ring sizing guides are also helpful but can sometimes be less precise. If ordering engagement rings in Melbourne online, make sure the retailer has a good return or resizing policy just in case.
Resizing: A Safety Net
Even with careful measurement, resizing might be necessary after the proposal. Fortunately, most rings can be resized to fit perfectly. It’s good to ask your jeweller about their resizing policies before buying.
A jeweller like Franco Jewellers is happy to assist with resizing, ensuring your ring stays as perfect as the moment you first gave it.

Shopping for Engagement Rings in Melbourne as a Couple: Why It’s the New Normal
When it comes to choosing engagement rings in Melbourne, couples are increasingly opting to shop together. This trend, once considered unconventional, has become a natural choice for many. But why are more and more couples choosing to make the experience of shopping for an engagement ring a shared journey?
Shopping for an engagement ring is, of course, a significant moment in a relationship. It marks the beginning of a lifetime together. The days of a surprise proposal with a ring picked out solo by one partner are being replaced by the modern, collaborative approach. So, what’s behind this shift, and why is it becoming the new normal? Let’s take a closer look at how shopping for engagement rings as a couple can strengthen your relationship, reduce stress, and lead to better choices.
Building Connection and Shared Meaning
When you shop for an engagement ring together, it’s more than just about choosing a beautiful piece of jewellery. It’s a symbol of your partnership, shared taste, and the future you’re about to create. Instead of the pressure falling on one person to choose a ring that represents both of your styles and preferences, both partners are involved in making that decision.
This shared decision-making fosters a deeper connection. You’ll discuss your likes, dislikes, and what’s meaningful to both of you. Whether it’s choosing a specific gemstone, metal, or setting style, this process is a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other’s tastes on a new level. As a couple, you’ll also have the chance to express your vision for the future, and selecting the perfect ring together only strengthens that bond.
Reducing Stress and Managing Expectations
Let’s face it: buying an engagement ring can be stressful. It’s not just the financial commitment; it’s the weight of the decision. The ring symbolizes a lifetime together, and choosing the right one can feel like a monumental task. But shopping as a couple eases some of that pressure. With both partners involved, there’s a greater sense of shared responsibility, and the burden of decision-making is lifted off one person’s shoulders.
When you shop for engagement rings together, you avoid the fear of choosing the wrong style or making a decision that might not align with your partner’s preferences. For the partner proposing, it eliminates the anxiety of guessing what the other person wants. Both of you can explore different options and make the final choice together, ensuring you’re both happy with the ring and the moment.
Better Choices and a More Personal Experience
Incorporating both of your preferences into the selection process leads to a more informed decision. Shopping together allows you to discuss different features of the ring, such as the cut, the setting, and the size of the diamond or gemstone. It also helps you find the right balance between aesthetics, practicality, and budget.
Visiting a jeweller together also opens the door to asking questions and learning more about the materials, craftsmanship, and quality of the engagement rings in Melbourne. For example, at Franco Jewellers, the experienced staff can walk you through the details of each piece, explaining how different diamonds or gemstones are graded and what factors influence the overall quality of the ring. This knowledge is invaluable, making the decision-making process smoother and more enjoyable.
In addition to learning more about the rings, shopping together is an opportunity to make the process more personal. Choosing a ring that reflects both of your personalities and shared memories creates a deeper emotional connection to the piece. Whether you pick a classic solitaire or a custom design that’s uniquely yours, the ring will hold more sentimental value when you’ve both had a hand in creating it.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: A Guide to Engagement Rings in Melbourne
When shopping for the perfect engagement ring, one of the biggest decisions you’ll face is choosing between a lab-grown and a natural diamond. Both options offer stunning beauty, but they come with key differences in cost, origin, and sustainability. If you’re searching for engagement rings in Melbourne, understanding these distinctions will help you make an informed decision that suits your values and preferences.
What Are Natural Diamonds?
Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years deep within the Earth’s crust under immense heat and pressure. These gems are mined from the earth, cut, and polished to become the dazzling stones we associate with engagement rings. Because of their long and natural formation process, no two diamonds are ever truly identical.
Pros of Natural Diamonds:
- Timeless and Prestigious: Natural diamonds have long been associated with luxury and tradition, making them a popular choice for engagement rings.
- Investment Value: These diamonds tend to retain their value over time, making them a potential long-term investment.
- One-of-a-Kind: Each natural diamond has unique characteristics, adding to its charm and exclusivity.
Cons of Natural Diamonds:
- Higher Cost: Natural diamonds are significantly more expensive due to their rarity and mining process.
- Environmental Impact: Diamond mining can have a large environmental footprint, including land disruption and energy consumption.
- Ethical Concerns: Unless sourced from ethical suppliers, natural diamonds can sometimes be linked to conflict mining practices.
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process. The result is a diamond that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond.
Pros of Lab-Grown Diamonds:
- More Affordable: Since they are created in a lab rather than mined, these diamonds typically cost 20-40% less than their natural counterparts.
- Ethically Sourced: Lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free, making them an ethical choice for buyers concerned about fair sourcing.
- Environmentally Friendly: These diamonds have a significantly lower environmental impact compared to mined diamonds.
Cons of Lab-Grown Diamonds:
- Lower Resale Value: Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds may not hold their value over time.
- Lack of Traditional Appeal: Some buyers still prefer the historical and symbolic significance of a naturally formed diamond.
- Potential Market Perception: While lab-grown diamonds are growing in popularity, some still view them as less prestigious than natural diamonds.
How to Choose the Right Diamond for Your Engagement Ring
When deciding between a lab-grown or natural diamond, consider your budget, values, and long-term expectations. If you prioritize tradition, rarity, and potential investment, a natural diamond may be the right choice. However, if you’re looking for a stunning, ethical, and budget-friendly alternative, a lab-grown diamond offers exceptional value.
No matter which option you choose, Melbourne is home to some of the finest jewellers offering engagement rings in Melbourne, with both natural and lab-grown diamonds available in a variety of styles.

How to Spot a High-Quality Diamond When Shopping for Engagement Rings in Melbourne
There’s something undeniably magical about a diamond engagement ring. It’s more than just a piece of jewelry—it’s a symbol of love, commitment, and the start of a lifelong journey together. But with so many options available, how do you know if you’re choosing a high-quality diamond?
If you’re searching for the perfect engagement ring in Melbourne, understanding diamond quality is essential. Whether you’re browsing in one of Melbourne’s luxury jewelry boutiques or exploring independent designers, knowing what to look for can help you make a confident, well-informed decision.
The 4Cs: Your Guide to Diamond Quality
A diamond’s quality is determined by four key factors, commonly known as the 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Each of these plays a role in the overall beauty and brilliance of the stone.
Cut: The Secret to Sparkle
The cut of a diamond is arguably the most important factor. It determines how well the stone reflects light, giving it that breathtaking sparkle. A well-cut diamond will shine brilliantly, while a poorly cut one may appear dull—even if it has high clarity or color.
💡 Tip: Look for diamonds with an “Excellent” or “Very Good” cut grade from reputable grading labs like GIA (Gemological Institute of America).
Color: The Whiter, the Better
Diamonds come in a range of shades, from completely colorless to light yellow or brown. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the rarer and more valuable it is.
💡 Tip: The best balance of quality and value is often in the G-H color range, where diamonds appear nearly colorless but are more affordable than the top-tier D-F range.
Clarity: Fewer Flaws, More Beauty
Clarity refers to the presence of tiny imperfections, known as inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). While most diamonds have some natural flaws, the fewer they have, the clearer and more brilliant they appear.
💡 Tip: Choose a diamond in the VS1-VS2 clarity range, where inclusions are nearly invisible to the naked eye, offering excellent value without the high price of a flawless diamond.
Carat Weight: Finding the Right Size
Carat weight affects a diamond’s size and price, but bigger isn’t always better. A well-cut diamond will often look more brilliant than a larger but poorly cut one.
💡 Tip: If you’re on a budget but still want a larger-looking diamond, consider a 0.90-carat stone instead of a full 1.0-carat—this small difference can save you money while looking nearly identical in size.
Beyond the 4Cs: What Else to Consider?
Certification Matters
Always buy a diamond that comes with certification from a trusted grading authority like GIA or AGS. This ensures the diamond has been evaluated professionally and meets industry standards.
Ethical Sourcing
If sustainability and ethics matter to you, look for lab-grown diamonds or ethically sourced natural diamonds. Many jewelers specializing in engagement rings in Melbourne offer conflict-free options, giving you peace of mind about your purchase.
Setting and Metal Choice
A high-quality diamond deserves a setting that enhances its beauty. Platinum and 18K gold are popular choices for their durability and elegance. The setting should also secure the diamond properly while allowing enough light to pass through for maximum brilliance.
Making the Right Choice in Melbourne
Melbourne is home to a vibrant jewelry scene, with everything from renowned luxury brands to bespoke artisans who create one-of-a-kind pieces. Whether you’re strolling through Collins Street’s high-end boutiques or visiting hidden gems in Fitzroy, take your time to find a jeweler who understands your vision.
When shopping for engagement rings in Melbourne, don’t hesitate to ask questions, compare options, and request to see diamonds under magnification. A great jeweler will be transparent about quality and help you find a ring that’s as extraordinary as your love story.
